The instructions are wrong. *gasp*

Now this is something that doesn’t really affect much on the model. Most probably won’t notice. If you follow the instructions, the shift pattern through the PDK will be 1, 3, 2, and then 4. This is because a few gears are switched.

Kinja'd!!!

This is how the gears directly in front of the engine will look if you follow the instructions.

To get the proper 1, 2, 3, 4 shifting, you have to switch the grey 16 tooth gear and the black 12 tooth gear effectively have to switch places. So it should look something like this.

Kinja'd!!!

This will give you the correct shift pattern.

The mistake is where you put these gears in on steps 267 - 269.

So if you’re building it, do this before the entire model is together. Because man is it a pain to get that engine out.

Thanks to Mondial goes to 11 for the link. If you don’t want to click it basically says that Lego thought shift smoothness was better than the correct shift pattern. However, mine seems to shift better with the sequential fix than it did before. The trans still does bind up, but it’s not nearly as bad as it was before. I still recommend the fix but your experience may vary.

I would if I had $250 to throw at it and a shelf to put it on.

It takes up a serious amount of shelf space. Like almost too much.

Hmm I’ve seen several posts about this recently - but it could’ve been the same person every time.

I did post build updates when finished with each parts box. So it was me.

According to LEGO it’s a feature not a bug.

So they say it's to make it shift better but mine shifts better with the fix. Weird.

I don’t have the set so no first hand experience, but there are comments that agree with you. I’d definitely go with the sequential fix.

I definitely made the fix on mine. Mostly for accuracy’s sake. But also because all the comments say it doesn’t detract from the smoothness. The Lego response of it being for smoothness might be a “sorry not sorry” response so they don’t have to issue any retractions or alterations to the manuals in later sets.

Mine shifted very badly before the fix. And I also recommend making a transmission stop so you can’t go from 4th to first.
